Obituary of Ellen Lett

Ellen Fahy Lett, a Pioneer and Innovator in the field of nursing, died in St. Vincents Hospital on October 31, 2004. She was 79 years old and a long time resident of Manhattan. Ellen graduated from Peter Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing in Boston, MA. She received a BSN, MSN and a PHD in Nursing Education from Columbia University. After receiving her MS at Columbia, Ellen won the Fulbright Scholarship to Norway to study at the Scandinavian Nursing and Health Care System. Retired Professor at Teachers College and Cornell University School of Nursing. She founded the prestigious School of Nursing at SUNY Stony Brook in 1969, and as its dean lead the school during twelve tumultuous years. She developed a Masters program for Nurse Practitioners, which had never been done before. In 1980, she became Dean of Nursing at The University of Minnesota where, again breaking new ground she founded a successful Doctoral program. She received The Prestigious Regents Medal while at the University of Minnesota. She is survived by her husband, Paul, of 35 years. Loving sister of Peggy Merrill, of Columbus OH and the late Joseph T. Fahy of Belmont, MA. Fond aunt of Robert, Stephen, Timothy, Ellen and Christopher Merrill of Columbus, OH. Meg Fahy Galligan of Needham, MA, Joseph Fahy of Winnetka, IL, Jack Fahy of Oakland, CA, and Mary Fahy Gardner of St. Petersburg, Fl. Memorial services to be announced.
