Mary Michelle Iacono wasn't only my Aunt but also my Godmother. When we lived on Long Island, she would always mention about wanting my sister and I to visit her, and her sister, and my Grandmother, as we called her Nonna. When we'd wake up at the apartment building, they'd always go out of their way to cook breakfast or taking us out to eat.
When my dad moved us to Virginia, her love to see us during holidays were insatiable, like the energy to help cook. Her smiles were endless and her gracious offerings were unlimited.
The biggest thing she loved to talk about, as well as Nina, were the children they taught. This was their biggest reward. There was always a story she wanted to mention during her visits with us. She'd glow when thinking about the children she taught.
Unfortunately, a star will no longer shine at night and she'll be dearly missed forever to those who knew her.

When I was around 12 years old, my great Aunt Mary and my Great Aunt Nina had me, Erik, and our mom stay with them in their Florida home. I’ll never forget exploring the wonders of Disney World together as a family. My Aunt Mary was using a mobility scooter at the time, and she took me and Erik through priority access to the front of the line for the first rollercoaster of the day, only to “suddenly” decide not to get on the ride. She repeated this trick again and again throughout the entire day, giving Erik and I unlimited access to the attractions and undoubtedly the best day ever. Years later, her generosity and kindness continued to shine as she always opened her home and offered to take me to plays, museums, dinner, or brunch together on my visits to the City. Even in recent years, she still cunningly managed to beat me to paying the check at lunch or dinner on occasion. She was a woman with a big heart who always made everyone around her feel like family. She made her family feel like the luckiest people in the world.

Mary was a remarkable woman. I admired her perseverance, determination and fierce independence. Her life’s work was to secure financial security for her family and carry on her parents’ legacy. In her later years, she devoted much of her time, and considerable energy, to dealing with the many responsibilities of managing a townhouse: the interminable paperwork and financial dealings, the myriad administrative requirements and city ordinances. The happiest I ever her saw was after the sale of the building. She was finally able to enjoy a new chapter in life, unencumbered by this beloved but heavy burden. She was truly at peace. I will always cherish the memory of Mary as she was in her final year, contented and untroubled. She will be missed!

Q: How would you describe Mary to someone who had never met them?
A: To know Mary is to love her. I have known Mary for over 12 years in fact Mary and Nina are became my sons Godmother. They baptized my sons in their very home. Mary was one of the most funniest people I've ever known. Mary and I would sit and talk for hours about life, the boys, her adventures as of her youth and travels. Mary was someone who always stood up for herself. She never allowed anyone to push her around. She would tell you like it is. Mary took excellent care of her sister. She told me Tarena I'm trying to hold on for Nina. She was her sister protector in every way possible. She held on to her family values and her beliefs. I enjoyed our monthly dinners and birthday celebrations. She always celebrated my sons birthday. She was an amazing Friend, Godmother, sister, daughter and more.

My cousin, Mary Iacono, was born into a large extended Italian family. Her father was one of eight children, and her mother was one of ten. Growing up, her aunts and uncles were kind to her, and she treated their children with love and kindness. Mary recognized she was a role model to her younger cousins and was especially caring to us. She always remembered everyone’s birthdays. Mary never married, but always provided financial assistance to her less fortunate cousins. I looked up to her as a model Christian woman.
Mary was 24 years my senior. I remember her working in the store beside her mother when I was growing up. Our parents were always quite close. As an adult, I would visit her, and her sister, Nina, at their apartment after work. We shared hot coffee, Italian cannolis from Veniero’s pastry shop, and good conversation – often about her work.
Like many women of Mary’s generation, she was not afforded the luxury to choose a career; however, in her 30’s she and her sister went to college and later graduated with a master’s in special education. She then embarked on a career that she truly loved and was naturally gifted. Mary’s dedication and unwavering commitment to her work impacted the lives of her autistic students. In the later years of her career, she worked tirelessly to provide these students with job experiences that led to lifelong skills.
I will always remember Mary for the kindness and generosity that she extended to me and my family. She always remembered my birthday and marked these special days with a lovely card and a gift. Mary had a profound impact on my life and everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

The Bible calls death an enemy. (1 Corinthians 15:26) What will happen to the people who have already died? Jehovah God has promised to bring billions of people back to enjoy life forever on earth. Mary, you were a selfless person who demonstrated kindness and compassion; you devoted your life to serving God and helping others.
You were a firecracker with a go-getter personality that enabled you to advocate for those who could not advocate for themselves, but you rarely advocated for yourself. Although your life was difficult, you stayed positive, and your smile was radiant. You made us laugh, even when you felt your worst.
We had many fun times during the holidays and vacations, and we especially enjoyed the cruise in Key West. During a difficult time in my life, you listened and knew what to say.
I feel blessed that you were in my life, and grateful to have had the opportunity to spend your finals days with you. I wish you had had more time with us, but you are with our Lord now and no longer in pain.

Mary, it’s hard to believe you’re gone. You were my sister-in-law, but to me, it felt like you were my sister. I always enjoyed your company, and we were close. You had so many wonderful attributes. You were kind to everyone you encountered.
I have so many fond memories of you. I remember when you went to college. You worked hard to achieve top grades while working in the store. I was so proud of you and Nina for realizing your dream of becoming a teacher. I admired you in many ways, especially, how much you cared about your students; you worked hard to bring out their true potential.
We spent our holidays and vacations together, and traveled frequently when we all retired. Touring Turkey was a dream come true. We had such fun times in Florida, especially during our shopping trips to Chicos and the outlet malls.
When Tony died, you and Nina were there for me, and I will be eternally grateful for your love and support.
The last time I saw you, although you were suffering, you were worried about my condition. This was how you lived your life, caring for everyone you loved. You will be missed.

My dearest cousin Mary in my life from birth and throughout my adult years. I grew up living across the street from her and spent my days visiting her at their store and in their apartment. Those were my fondest memories growing up with Mary and Nina along with their mom Aunt Lucy. Mary treated me with as her little sister and spoiled me with so much love and kindness. We went shopping together, took me to the movies, plays and hung out together every chance she had. The beauty that surrounded her was enlightening and inspirational. She taught me right from wrong and never let me down. I wanted to be of the same image as her with her glowing personality and strength. There is no one else in this world that ever took her place in my life and I looked up to her with the upmost respect for who I am today is on account of my cousin Mary. I will cherish all the memories, laughter, joy and laughter she brought into my life and she will remain with me in my heart forever❤️ Love you Mary
