Lee Wai Jonathan Wong was born in Hong Kong on August 3, 1969. His family emigrated to the United States in 1970 and settled in New Jersey. Jonathan, as he liked to be called, received an almost entirely Catholic school education, attending St. Peter's High School and earned his MBA from St. Peter’s College. Jonathan’s career found him working and forming relationships with companies like Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch in the mid 90’s as well as Citibank and media giant Univision in the 2000’s as a financial strategy consultant for Resources Global. As a boss, he was respected and loved and as a consultant, he was valued and highly sought after. Throughout that time, Jonathan met his wife Dinine while on vacation in London. They married and settled in NYC and together have two teenage children, Cole Parker and Greyson Holland Francesca. Jonathan’s greatest love in life was his family. Jonathan took huge pleasure and pride in his children’s accomplishments, like the kids’ being part of a ski race team at both Mt. Peter and Campgaw. He loved loved loved watching his son play baseball and seeing his daughter on pointe in ballet (taking her to classes as often as he could manage). Witnessing his son’s baseball prowess and daughter’s ballet and volleyball success brought much joy to him. Jonathan not only took pride in his kids' accomplishments, he worked tirelessly for the organizations that catapulted the kids' sports success. He sat on the Board at both Greenwich Village Little League and the Campgaw Ski Team, helped run the mountains' race program and also served (with great pleasure) as his son's baseball coach. Even after being sidelined in his wheelchair, Jonathan cheered with pride in his daughter's landing the lead in an off Broadway play as well as gaining success with a national commercial. It made Jonathan so proud that Cole's academic excellence made it possible for him to attend Xavier High School as an Ignatian Scholar and valued member of Xavier's JV and Varsity baseball teams. One of Jonathan's biggest joys in life was planning family vacations and holidays. He loved taking the kids to Disney World and the family visited there often. Toward the end of his life, Jonathan was excited to show the kids his beloved Hawaii via a family vacation in Napa Valley and Ka’uai. One of his last “requests” to Dinine before he became unable to walk without assistance was to take the kids to see and land on a glacier. So, in 2015, the family took a trip to Seattle and Alaska, chartered a helicopter ride and landed on the Mendenhall Glacier. Jonathan had a passion for his family, his extended family, and also for great food. He loved Italian food, a good steak dinner, and sushi. He never strayed far away from his mainstay, Chinese food, as well; even seeking out a nearly-closed Chinese restaurant while in Picadilly Circus in London and engaging the staff (in Cantonese) to cook for him and his friends. He was a big-hearted man who loved to hang out and joke the night away over a good meal and cocktails. His big heart often extended to his niece, Danika. Her Pediatric Cancer diagnosis of Neuroblastoma moved him to tears and he often spent time after work running items to his sister-in-law for Danika’s comfort or hygiene. There were many times early in her treatment when Uncle Jonathan was the only person who could hold and comfort Danika. No other embrace would do. He loved the Ronald McDonald House and the ways it became home for families with children in treatment. It was in the RMH kitchen where Jonathan taught Danika's mom how to make the most delicious eggs. "The secret is in the butter, Sissy," he told his sister-in-law. She never forgot it. Jonathan was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy in 2013. MSA is a rare neurological disease which is terminal. It slowly turns off the communication between the brain and nerves and muscles. It largely resembles ALS mixed with Parkinson’s. One of Jonathan’s hopes was that one day there would be a cure for his MSA. In his very last days, Jonathan was often shut off from family due to Covid 19 restrictions at his nursing home, but when moved to a hospital, Dinine was permitted to visit him every day. She often engaged in the work of feeding food-insecure people through an organization called Support + Feed. Jonathan delighted in listening to Dinine “at work” and sometimes even being part of the zoom calls from his bedside. He was still able to laugh and let people know that he was “in there” up until the very end, in January. Lee W. Jonathan Wong is survived by his parents, Kwok and Yuet Lee Wong, his brothers, Lee Fu Wong and Lee Ming Wong, and their wives, Parul and Andria, as well as his sister-in-law, Danielle. He was an awesome uncle to Day, Danika, Kai and Leianni. To say Jonathan will be missed is an understatement. We knew him as "Big Daddy" and "Johnny Wong", Jonathan or Lee. Whatever we called him; the husband, father, son, brother, cousin, uncle, co-worker, coach, and friend was loved by so many throughout his life. The life he lived and the legacy of so much love and laughter he leaves behind will never fade from our hearts and memories. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, the funeral home is not able to hold many flowers, nor donate to any organization (even the church across the street!)
