Please share a memory of Catherine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that we share news of Catherine Mary Sweeney's passing on November 24, 2020. Catherine was affectionately known as Mickey by her family and friends.
Mickey was born on January 17th, 1930 in New York City, New York to Robert and Elizabeth Barry (predeceased). She was married to Lawrence Sweeney (predeceased)
for fifty-eight years.
Mickey had four siblings Joan Barry, William Barry (predeceased), Ruth Ann Barry (predeceased) and Elizabeth Fallon (predeceased).
Mickey was a lifelong resident of the Kips Bay Area. She attended and graduated from Our Lady of the Scapular Grammar School and Mabel Dean Bacon Vocational High School. She was a parishioner of the Church of Our Lady of the Scapular of Mount Carmel and Church of Epiphany and the latter for the last twenty years.
She married her teenage sweetheart Larry on November 22, 1952. They built a loving family and raised three wonderful children Robert, Michael (predeceased) and Elizabeth (Sissy) Santora.
Throughout the years she worked for the Carmelita Friars at the Marian House. She was dedicated to her career at New York Life Insurance Company and retired after twenty-seven years.
Mickey loved and adored her grandchildren Robert, Michael, Danielle, and Mathew as well as her great grandchildren RJ and Mason. She was a loving, caring mother-in-law to Anne and Carmen. Furthermore, she had many nieces and nephews whom she was dearly fond of.
Mickey was well known and active in her community. She enjoyed volunteering for the local senior citizens association and was known for coordinating birthday celebrations. She served as the Sergeant in Arms in her housing community in recent year. Her favorite pastimes were playing Bingo, Pokeno and taking trips to Atlantic City.
Mickey will be remembered as a sweet, loving, compassionate and affectionate mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt and friend and will sorely be missed.
